Your House Number – use it or lose it

In the spring I received an order for a house sign with just a house name on it. Last week the customer emailed me saying “Earlier this year I purchased a nameplate for our new house, not having a house number on the sign is proving to be problematic to the postal and delivery services. I wish to purchase a numberplate showing the house number….”

So this week I’m sending the customer a number plaque which he will place close to the existing sign. He would have been better off if the initial order had been for a sign with both the house name and number. This illustrates the importance of a house number and correct address and clearly displaying this on your property.

You can search for your address in its correct format on the Royal Mail database - use the 'Find a postcode' link. Most postal and courier services rely on this information to make accurate and timely deliveries. If you don’t use and  display a valid house number and/or name they will do their best to find you but your letters and parcels may end up being returned to sender or becoming lost in the system.
