Fencing panels are becoming increasingly hard to find as
construction timber is being sucked up by boom economies elsewhere
in the world.
The severe January storms experienced by many parts of the UK
turned many garden fences to match wood. Householders are keen to
repair them and make the most of the recent spell of good weather,
this has pushed up demand on some suppliers by as much as 300%.
But European timber producers are now exporting more of their wood
to Dubia and China where they can achieve better prices. This has
left fencing suppliers in this country unable to satisfy demand.
Wendy Baker of the
Fencing Contractors Association commented, “Several small to
medium sized companies across the UK are unable to meet orders and
are on the verge of ruin. I have had complaints from mills who can’t
source timber and from contractors who can’t get hold of timber
materials.”
One nationwide garden and DIY chain estimates that it has only a
quarter of its normal stock yet holds 25,000 pre-paid orders waiting
to be filled.
They say that high fences make for
good neighbours - so it looks
like the relationship with next door may be strained for some time
to come.
