A burglar will look at your property for signs that there’s
no one home and that he won't be disturbed while carrying out his
work
The tell-tale signs the burglar looks for to select an easy target:
- A house with open windows
When you’re out of the house always make sure that your home
is properly secured. Fit locks to all downstairs windows and any
upstairs ones that are easily accessible - doors should be secured
with good mortise locks and bolts.
- No lights in the house at night
Invest in time switches to turn lights on and off in different
rooms. But don’t go away and leave curtains closed during the
daytime - this is a sure sign that there’s no one home.
- Overgrown hedges around your property
The burglar doesn’t like an audience - cut back the
undergrowth to ensure he’s easily seen. When you’ve
finished lock away the tools, and the ladders, which may be used
to force an entry into your home.
- Deliveries left on the doorstep
Remember to cancel the milk and newspapers when you’re away
on holiday. Get a neighbour to check around the house and collect
any mail that’s left in the letterbox.
- No car on the drive
Your good
neighbour may also be willing to park their car on your
drive if you return the favour when they’re away.
In most cases the house burglar is an opportunist - make his work
appear a little more difficult and he may think it’s not worth
the risk.
