That old garden shed is now the new home studio office

The garden shed is no longer the sole domain of the stereotyped model maker or short-wave radio enthusiast. These days it has been elevated to the realms of cool, timber-clad chic by authors, artists and home workers who escape to their refuge to get those creative juices flowing or do an uninterrupted day of work.

The home studio may often be referred to as “the shed” but these structures bear no resemblance to the creations found on the allotment – thrown together from discarded sash windows and old doors along with the odd piece of corrugated iron just for good measure. No, they are likely to be fully weatherproof and insulated, have electricity and a wood laminate floor. Wifi and digital cordless phones means that they don’t even have to have a BT line for the internet or calls.

However small the distance between the main house and the studio office it provides that distinct and necessary barrier between home and work. When cocooned in its warm, weather boarded interior there are none of the domestic distractions of the family, TV or fridge. The occupants can spend all day in their own private world of creativity or commerce. And after the days work is done, drop the latch and the commute home is just a few paces across the lawn.

The choice is vast for anyone installing a garden studio – from the basic shed (in need of some improvement) to the pre-wired and carpeted home-office. Planning permission isn’t usually required and, if it’s under 30 square metres, building regs don’t apply. But don’t make it too cosy – you may never want to leave.
