Ceramic House Plaque – Harriet Hannah’s Cottage

A rectangular ceramic house name plaque with hand painted lettering and floral border.

I believe that, with this particular style of pottery plaque, the text and design is painted on by hand using an underglaze. Afterwards a clear glaze is applied to the entire plaque and it is re-fired. Any ceramicists out there please correct me if I’m wrong.

Perhaps the artist who painted the lettering on to this plaque should have had a wee dram to steady their hand – or maybe they had already over indulged.

Before buying any ceramic house sign always get assurances that it is frost proof. Otherwise, after the winter, your sign will only be fit for the floor of your local Greek restaurant.

A. Hello Jim – I’d suggest looking for a local ceramic workshop or pottery in Spain. This type of house plaque is part of the street furniture over there so there’s bound to be someone who makes them nearby – try asking your neighbours.

The advantage of doing it this way is that it’s going to blend in with surrounding properties and not stick out like a sore thumb. Also you’re not going to be paying a fortune in delivery costs – glazed ceramic plaques can be quite heavy!
