Old wooden house plaque – Alma Cottage

Regular readers will know well my inherent dislike of the rustic wood slice. Well, in this case, I’m going to say this is an exception. However, it is let down by one rather important detail – it’s almost impossible to make out the house name!

So what makes this one different? To start with, it is quite a pleasant asymmetrical shape. Also, many years of exposure to the weather has darkened the wood until it almost appears to be a piece of slate or stone.

But it is the hand carved, v-cut lettering that really does it for me. It is nicely proportioned and fills the nameplate well; it is such a shame that it’s so hard to make out. The application of gold leaf would remedy this and really transform the plaque. This house sign would then look absolutely gorgeous.

I don't know how I stumbled across your blog, as I HAD no interest in signs or sign making.

But I'm here now, and I really like your description/criticism of the signs. Your use of language is direct and to the point and I've found out, about a subject, that (until today) I wouldn't have dreamt of finding out about, or looking into.
